Rowland Studio

Rowland Studio, a Seattle institution, has been capturing memories for over seven decades. The studio was established in 1947 by Rowland Johnson, an ironworker at Isaacson Iron Works who decided to transform his hobby into a vocation. The den in his modest Seattle home was converted into a photography studio, and his basement became a darkroom. Rowland's reputation for photographic excellence grew quickly, and he soon opened a professional studio in the Roosevelt neighborhood, where it still remains today.

A Legacy of Photographic Excellence and Customer Service

For over half a century, senior portraits by Rowland Studio have been a school tradition. Rowland's son, Bruce Rowland Johnson, shared his father's passion for photography and joined the family business. Bruce grew the business by maintaining Rowland Studio's high standards for photographic excellence and customer service until his retirement in 2017.

In 2015, Bruce hired Briane Henak, a talented photographer from Nashville, Tennessee. Briane's love of photography took hold in high school, and she honed her skills at Tennessee Tech University, graduating with degrees in Photography and Education. After a first interview, Bruce knew he had found his successor, and he offered her the job. Briane and her husband, a Seattle native, now make their home in the Green Lake area. Bruce transferred ownership of the studio to Briane in November of 2017.
